L’idea del laboratorio prende vita in Maria durante la convalescenza dalla malattia del tifo e si realizza  nel 1862 nella casa di Teresa Pampuro, una delle prime delle Figlie dell’Immacolata in seguito, Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice. Nel 1864, quando Don Bosco si reca a Mornese, Maria e Petronilla non solo dirigono sapientemente il laboratorio, ma hanno aperto anche l’oratorio festivo e diverse attività per favorire la crescita umana e cristiana delle ragazze di Mornese. L’ispirazione essenziale, che sin dall’inizio anima la sua missione, è espressa dalla stessa Maria in un incontro con l’amica: «Accetteremo qualche ragazza che vorrà imparare a cucire e le insegneremo, col fine principale però, ricordiamolo bene, di toglierla dai pericoli, di farla buona e specialmente di insegnarle a conoscere e amare il Signore». Con la dolcezza, l’affabilità, il rispetto per le ragazze da un lato, e la fermezza e l’autorevolezza dall’altro, Maria applica un metodo in perfetta sintonia con il Sistema Preventivo di Don Bosco.

The idea of laboratory comes to life during Maria’s convalescence of typhus disease and is carried out in 1862 in the house of Teresa Pampuro, one of the first Daughters of the Immaculate Conception, later on the Daughters of Maria Ausiliatrice. In 1864, when Don Bosco went to Mornese, Maria and Petronilla did not only skillfully manage the laboratory, but also opened the festive oratory and started various activities to promote human and Christian growth of the girls from Mornese. The essential inspiration, that from the very beginning animates her mission, is expressed by Maria during her meeting with her friend: “We will accept any girl who is willing to learn sewing and will teach her, but the main purpose, let’s remember it well, is to take them away from danger, teach them good things and especially to know and love God”. With gentleness, affability and respect for the girls on the one hand and firmness and authority on the other Maria applies this method in perfect harmony with the Preventive System of Don Bosco.
