16. la Santa | the Saint

Maria Domenica Mazzarello nasce il 9 maggio 1837 a Mornese. La giovane, come i suoi fratelli e sorelle, non frequenta la scuola, ma impara a leggere con l’aiuto del padre.  Nel 1860 il paese è colpito da una grave epidemia di tifo, Maria ne è contagiata e, sebbene guarita, il suo fisico ne risente pesantemente impedendole per sempre di riprendere il lavoro nei campi. Maria decide così, di imparare il mestiere di sarta, in modo da poter aprire un piccolo laboratorio per le ragazze del paese.

L’incontro con Don Bosco nel 1864 è un momento molto importante nella vita di Maria che è già assistita spiritualmente da Don Pestarino.

Il 5 agosto del 1867, Maria e dieci sue compagne fondano l’Istituto delle Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice, consacrandosi a Dio con i voti religiosi e, dopo pochi mesi, inizia a vivere in comunità.

Nel 1879 la Casa Madre è trasferita a Nizza Monferrato dove Madre Mazzarello muore il 14 maggio 1881, all’età di 44 anni. Alla sua morte, l’Istituto conta già 165 suore e 65 novizie sparse in 28 case in Italia,  Francia ed America. Maria è beatificata nel 1938 e canonizzata nel 1951. La festa di Maria Mazzarello ricorre il 13 maggio.

Maria Domenica Mazzarello was born on May 9 in 1837 in Mornese. The girl, as well as her brothers and sisters, doesn’t attend school, but learns to read with her father’s help. In 1860 the land is hit with a severe typhus epidemic, Maria was infected and although healed, her physical health was heavily affected which prevents her from resuming the work in the fields. Maria thus decides to learn the craft of sewing in order to open a small laboratory for the girls of the community. The encounter with Don Bosco in 1864 is a very important moment in Maria’s life, who is already spiritually led by Don Pestarino.

On August 5, 1867, Maria and her ten companions establish the Institute of the Daughters of Maria Ausiliatrice, devoting themselves to God and becoming nuns, and after several months begin to live in the community.

In 1879 the Mother House is moved to Nizza Monferrato where Mother Mazzarello dies on May 14, 1881 at the age of 44. At her death, the Institute counts 165 nuns and 65 novices scattered across 28 houses in Italy, France and America. Maria is beatified in 1938 and is canonized in 1951. The feast of Maria Mazzarello takes place on May 13th.
