18. il Castello | the Castle

La traccia originaria del castello risale al XIII secolo, quando la famiglia genovese dei Rosso della Volta costruisce una prima fortificazione. Nel secolo successivo, l’edificio passa nelle mani di vari feudatari tra cui i Doria. Nel 1404, la fortificazione è occupata e distrutta dalle truppe liguri, le quali non lasciano alcuna traccia dell’antica costruzione se non nelle muraglie che oggi racchiudono il giardino. Il castello è subito ricostruito dai Doria, ma è sottoposto a una grande opera di restauro e di ristrutturazione soltanto nel 1700, quando è adattato a residenza signorile, destinazione che mantiene tuttora. Notevoli sono le vestigia della fortificazione originaria: l’apparato a sporgere su beccatelli a doppia mensola in arenaria, la merlatura e la configurazione del mastio. L’aspetto richiama quello degli altri castelli genovesi del Monferrato con alcune particolarità che permettono di distinguerlo dagli altri: la pianta complessa e articolata che risente dell’edificio precedente e la presenza di due torri.

Il castello si presenta oggi in buono stato di conservazione.

The original trace of the castle dates back to the 13th century, when the Genovese family of Rosso della Volta constructs a first fortification. In the next century, the structure passes into the hands of various feudal lords, among which is Doria. In 1404 the fortification was occupied and destroyed by the Ligurian troops, which leave no traces of the ancient construction except the walls which today enclose the garden. The castle is immediately reconstructed by the Doria family, but is undergoing a major restoration and renovation work only in 1700, when it is adapted to a noble residence, the purpose which it still maintains. The remains of the original fortification are remarkable: the apparatus sticks out over counterfort of double sandstone shelf, the battlements and configuration of watchtower. The look recalls that of other Genovese castles of Monferrato with some peculiarities, which make it possible to distinguish it from the others: complex and articulated shape which shows the effects of the previous construction and the presence of two towers. The castle today appears to be well-preserved.
