6. la Parrocchia | the Parish Church

La parrocchia è centrale nella vita e nell’itinerario spirituale di Maria. Essa è, infatti, il luogo della sua nascita alla vita cristiana (qui è battezzata il 9 maggio 1837), ma è anche la culla della sua fede, alimentata dai sacramenti dell’Eucarestia, ricevuta nel 1850 e della Riconciliazione alla quale si associa il ministero di direzione spirituale di Don Pestarino nei suoi confronti.

Maria vive trentacinque dei suoi quarantaquattro anni, profondamente inserita nella comunità ecclesiale del paese, dalla quale tutto riceve e alla quale tutto dona, collaborando alla vita della comunità parrocchiale con apertura di mente e spirito.

La Chiesa Parrocchiale, dedicata a San Silvestro e a San Nicola da Tolentino, è aperta al culto nel 1602. Essa si presenta oggi in stile composito. L’interno è ricco di dipinti.  Oltre all’altare maggiore in marmo di Carrara, è da segnalare il fonte battesimale dove è battezzata Santa Maria Mazzarello (1900, scultore toscano Bacci di Serravezza); esso si presenta di forma ottagonale, in marmo bianco, con gli emblemi degli evangelisti e con la statua di San Giovannino ed è sormontato dall’antico quadro che rappresenta il Battesimo di Gesù al Giordano.

The parish church is central to Maria’s life and spiritual journey. It is indeed the place of her birth to Christian life (here she was baptized on May 9, 1837), and it is also the cradle of her faith, fueled by the sacraments of Eucharist, received in 1850, and reconciliation to which is associated the ministry of Don Pestarino towards her.

Maria lives thirty-five out of her forty-four years of life deeply involved in the ecclesial community of her land, from which she receives everything and to which she gives everything, collaborating in the life of the parish community with an open mind and spirit.

The parish church, dedicated to San Silvestro and San Nicola from Tolentino, is open to worship in 1602. Today it is represented in a composite style. The interior is full of paintings. Apart from the great altar, made from the marble from Carrara, it is worth mentioning the baptismal font where Maria Mazzarello is baptized (1900, Tuscan sculptor Bacci from Serravezza); it is of octagonal shape, of white marble, with the emblems of the evangelists and with the statue of San Giovannino, and above it there is the ancient painting, depicting the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan river.
